Games kids can't wait for

Game time is where shy kids open up, friendships form and teams learn to cheer each other on. Here are easy, tested ideas that work in a gym, a fellowship hall or a classroom, plus simple ways to help kids really connect.

Get kids talking

Not every great moment is a race. These favorites from our leaders help kids know each other, and help you know them.

Pass the question

Grab any object: a stuffed animal, a beanbag, even a marker. Ask a fun question like "What's your favorite food?" or "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?" Kids raise their hands, and whoever gets the object gets to answer.

Why it works: only the person holding the object talks, so everyone gets a turn to be heard.

Build a planet

Use kids' answers to invent an imaginary planet together. What color is the sky? What do the animals eat? What's the planet's favorite game? Sketch it on a whiteboard as the ideas pile up.

Bonus: end by talking about how God made our real world, and everything in it, on purpose.

Highs and lows

Go around the circle and let each kid share a high from their week. Sharing a low is always optional, but everyone shares a high.

Why it works: kids learn their group cares about their life, and you learn what to pray about.

Games by age

Simple rules, little setup, lots of laughing. Adjust for your space and group size.

Young kids at an Awana club

Little ones (preschool)

Great for Cubbies® and young Sparks® kids.

  • Sheep, sheep, shepherd: duck, duck, goose, but the chaser is the shepherd finding a lost sheep.
  • Parachute popcorn: bounce soft balls on the parachute and count how long you can keep them up.
  • Freeze dance: play a worship song and freeze when the music stops.
  • Animal parade: call out an animal from a Bible story and everyone moves like it.

Elementary

  • Four corners trivia: label the corners A, B, C, D. Ask a question from this week's lesson and kids run to their answer.
  • Verse scramble relay: write the verse one word per card. Teams race to put it in order.
  • Sharks and minnows: a classic for open space. Tagged minnows become seaweed and help tag.
  • Leader says: Simon says with a twist. Add motions from the memory verse.

Middle and high school

  • Would you rather: quick, funny choices. Kids move to one side of the room or the other.
  • Bible charades: act out a Bible story while teams guess. No talking allowed!
  • Team challenge: give each team a cup tower or a puzzle and a time limit.
  • Two truths and a lie: a great way for leaders and students to get to know each other.

Make game time count

  • Explain fast. Kids want to play, not listen. Give the rules in under a minute and demo once.
  • Watch the edges. Look for the kid standing alone and invite them in by name.
  • Cheer effort. Celebrate kindness, teamwork and good sportsmanship, not just winners.
  • Name the why. Before you start, share one way the team can show God's love while playing.
  • Keep it safe. Clear the space, set boundaries and keep enough leaders watching.

Have a game kids love?

We'd love to hear it! Send it our way and it may show up here for other leaders to try.
